The 2015 World Gymnaestrada, which drew more than 20,000 gymnasts and Gymnastics enthusiasts to Helsinki last summer, was named Sport Event of the Year at the prestigious annual Finnish Sport Gala Tuesday evening.
Taking home the weight-shaped silver trophy was a triumphant moment for 2015 World Gymnaestrada officials, including 2015 World Gymnaestrada President Kirsti Partanen and Secretary General Maria Laakso, as well as Finnish Gymnastics Federation PresidentAnne Martikainen. As a nod to the event that “made the Earth move” last July, all three attended the gala in specially designed dresses made from recycled 2015 World Gymnaestrada flags.
The winner of the Sport Event of the Year award is selected by a committee of 100 people with strong ties to sport in Finland, and the awards gala is broadcast on live TV in the country.
The quadrennial World Gymnaestrada is the world’s largest international Gymnastics festival and the cornerstone of the FIG’s Gymnastics for All programme. The World Gymnaestrada welcomes performers of all ages and nationalities for a week of Gymnastics performances and international friendship, capped by evening gala shows highlighting performances from different regions of the world.
